I for one am not really that bothered about Lion or any OS updates - I love to have the latest thing and all improvements are always good. However, in my opinion they need to fix the OS I have before they release another one! For example with the last "update" [10.6.7] my Open type fonts are now playing up and the wonderful new Mac App Store takes about a minute to launch!
I get very worried when I hear El-Jobso talking about post a PC world as if he has decided already that the PC is dead. I for one could not make a living using an iPad and an iPhone.
Macs have always historically been used by content creators and designers [like me]. If, sometime in the future, Apple plan to lock down the system like they do with the iOS then I will simply stop upgrading my system. I could carry on using the system I have now until I retire, so it makes no odds to me if they want to stop making "proper" macs. I would imagine the rest of the design community would feel the same.
Don't get me wrong, I have an iPad and an iPhone and I can see how for the vast majority of consumers these would fit the bill for all your computing needs. However, if these consumers are going to have something to look at or play with or listen to, then us designers need the tools to create stuff with and that means powerful PCs.

I will now be picturing Steve Jobs answering that phone during his Keynote in my dreams. :)
I cannot see it happening. I am not saying it won't be released in August but it wont be at the WWDC.
For a start, the Worldwide Developers conference is not a suitable place to release an American-centric consumer product.
Secondly, this would be big news and would require its own dedicated news conference. It would be really hyped up to all the assembled press.

I would be happy with the *real* replacement for the 12" Powerbook. Can't work with that gloss screen, and can't bear the integrated graphics. Apple need to get real if they want professionals like photographers to buy a new laptop. :confused:

Ok then you do not know how to follow the order of operations....ie if you want 2, you have to have another set of parenthesis (so you evaluate it before dividing) or mistakenly think that multiplication somehow supersedes the use of division

Very interesting! I think it's funny how so many people are so sure that they know Apple will stick to their regular timeframe and nothing else. As if the idea of them switching things up is just out of the question.

I am all for buying software via download. I rarely get boxed versions of anything any more. But the OS is a different story. You need an external media for maintenance/reinstall. Also, the Mac App Store is not friendly to businesses yet. Until they have robust setups for master accounts and per seat licenses, it's not a viable distribution method for business customers.
And while Apple is also selling physical media with this version, it's pretty obvious that they won't bother with it next version of the OS. It's the same thing they did with the switch to DVD media in 10.4. To get CDs that worked on the DVD-less computers that were only a couple years old, you had to send Apple your DVD and get CDs mailed to you, which was a major pain. Apple has a long history of killing technologies quickly and giving the customers with older computers the shaft.
Even if they charge more for physical media, they should continue to offer it in the long term. I'd love to see something like the USB stick that comes with the Macbook Airs and I'd be willing to pay extra for it. Optical media really needs to just die already. DVDs and CDs are awful for data storage.

Niice. I would assume that they forgo using the 2.0 GHz chip though. Right now, their lineup is pretty solid using two different speeds. Unless the modify the structure of the lineup (as in lower prices), I think it would make sense.

Yeah, that was prior to the invites sent out. Jobs from experience will be pitching the movie store hard..meaning the laptop updates have to take a back seat for now. I mean they announced a 24" iMac quietly just to give you an idea of how important this is to them. Laptop updates? i wouldnt count on it...at least for now

I knew someone would say that. ... I'm not usually there to talk to them about that kind of security ... The client gets you in for particular job that they're paying you for... So, by all means ask them about it,
I've been a consultant for most of my business life. No matter what a client retains me to do, if I see another area where they need help, I'm going to discuss it. I'd be doing them a great disservice to "patch a broken arm" and ignore the "cancer" that represents a greater threat... and I tell them so. I've never had a client fail to appreciate this approach.

Because most clients are less computer literate than the consultants they hire. I don't rely on their word. I check their system(s). It's about being thorough and earning the fee I charge them. I would never leave a client's computer unprotected, unless I explained the risk in detail and they flatly refused. That has never happened, especially since there are great free antivirus solutions available.
Just wanted to put forward another point of view where it might be useful beyond the phrase, "the Mac doesn't have viruses, why would you need it?"
The flip-side of that phrase is, "Windows DOES have viruses; why wouldn't every Windows box have antivirus protection running?"
